Get to know… Dr. David de la Rosa in ten questions

A city to live in…
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where I grew up and where many of my earliest memories are. And Barcelona, the city where I’ve spent much of my professional career and where I’ve started my family.

A passion…
My family, especially my children. And also clinical research, which I’ve always found to be a very stimulating way to try to improve what we do with our patients.

Film or theater?
Probably theater. I really enjoy film, but theater has the power of directness: even a simple play can convey a very special emotion.

The last book you read…
I especially remember The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. More recently, I’ve been reading To Sell Is Human by Daniel Pink, an interesting book about how we all try to persuade or convince others in our daily lives.

Your favorite food…
Canarian stew or my mother’s puchero when I go home. And a good, well-cooked rice dish, either seafood or rabbit.

If David de la Rosa weren’t a doctor, what profession would he pursue?
Probably something related to teaching or scientific research. I’ve always been very drawn to science, especially biology, and I also enjoy explaining and sharing what I learn.

His favorite song…
Although I really like rock, many of the songs that move me the most are ballads. Probably one of the ones that moves me the most every time I hear it is “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith.

What keeps him up at night?
The health of the people I love. And also that anxiety that arises when you know you still have important projects or responsibilities to complete.

What was his last trip?
My last trip was to Mexico, to attend the congress of the Mexican Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery. In recent years, I’ve had the opportunity to travel to different Latin American countries for professional reasons, and they have been very enriching experiences, both professionally and personally.

What horrifies him the most?
The capacity that human beings have to harm themselves and others.
